Coco Crazy

Many people can’t help but think of coconuts as being synonymous with Hawaii. From coconut palms swaying in the breeze, to frothy coconut cocktails and coconut bras on hula dancers, coconuts are a part of the exotic and tropical image visitors have of the islands. And while this commercialized vision of Hawaii that began with tourism is far from reality today, coconut products remain very popular with locals and visitors alike.
The coconut got its name from the 16th Century Portuguese and Spanish “cocos” meaning grinning face. It was so named because of the three small holes on one end of its shell were said to resemble a face. Coconuts are very versatile with every part – from their oil, milk, water, and husks -- being put to use for a variety of purposes ranging from food and drink to soaps, cosmetics, and décor. Opening a coconut is no easy task, but if you decide to take on the challenge, follow the steps of this simple YouTube video.
If you’d rather leave the work for someone else, there are lots of readymade coconut products for you to purchase and enjoy. From refreshing and hydrating coconut water, to coconut syrup, coconut candy, and coconut M&Ms, foods full of coconut are plentiful in all our Shops of Hawaii stores.

Coconut water in particular has gained much popularity of late due to its ability to help one rehydrate. It also contains lots of potassium and many find it easier to consume -- and equally nutritious as 2 bananas. The good news, is that you don’t need to go through the trouble of opening a coconut to enjoy it's water because there are many brands of this great tasting drink available on the market today. Popular brands include Naked, and Vita Coco, but one of my personal favorites is Coco Cool, available only at Shops of Hawaii stores. Coco Cool is made in Thailand from green coconuts and it has a very clean finish. Best of all it is easy to drink and not too sweet.

Coconut items make great gifts too. After all, what is not to love about a coconut! Three of my favorite coconut gift items from our online shop are: coconut bras, coconut candles and coconut soap made locally on Maui.
