Banyan Tree Park along Front Street, Lahaina

Blog Category:

If you've ever strolled through Lahaina's famous Front Street on Maui, it's hard to miss one of the world's largest and most impressive Banyan trees. Originally planted on April 24, 1873, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Christian missionary work in Lahaina, this tree was just 8 feet tall at the time. Today it stands over 60 feet tall and spreads out with more than 16 trunks to occupy an area of over 200 feet.

This amazing Banyan tree is truly a breathtaking sight to see! It looks like many trees growing close together with branches that connect. Adjacent to the Banyan Tree Park are several of Maui's most historic landmarks - the Old Lahaina Courthouse (which now serves as the Visitor Center for Lahaina), the reconstructed ruins of Lahaina Fort, Lahaina's Small Boat Harbor (where several fishing and whale watching boat tours operate from), the old Pioneer Inn (Hawaii's second oldest hotel), and of course, the beautiful Front Street.

If you're looking for gift ideas and souvenirs, or even some sunscreen and ice cold beverages, stop by one of our several shops located in walking distance of the historic Banyan tree: Lahaina Discount (located just south of the tree, across from King Kamehameha III School on Front Street), Whalers General Store at Banyan Inn Marketplace (directly across the street from Banyan Tree Park), and Whalers General Store at Pioneer Inn (on Wharf St., across the north end of Banyan Tree Park).
